In 1974, I started Makins Hats on an unemployment check in my one-room, 4th floor walk-up. Using a jiffy steamer, I molded the raw hat bodies over wood blocks. I baked these hats dry in my home oven. Now more than 30 years later, we are in our 3rd New York City factory. We still make all our hats by hand, one at a time, using steam to mold the straw and felt bodies over the wood blocks. We take great pride in making the finest hats available. Makins hats are soft, flexible, easy-to-wear- hats that people feel good in.

Brad Pitt personally requested Makins hats for the 60 page shoot and cover of that July issue of W magazine that he first shot with Angelina Jolie. Some of the hats Brad wore in the issue were actually his own Makins hats that he brought to the shoot. Jamie Foxx wears a sewn leather porkpie, Djimon Hounsou wears a sewn leather fedora. Tiger Woods wears our two-tone yellow and black panama, Snoop Dog wears a lot of our hats, Cedric the Entertainer wears a Makins hat in the Budweiser light commercials. And Steve Harvey, Nicholas Cage, Wyclef Jean and Denzel Washington have all worn Makins hats . Madonna owns Makins hats as does Eddie Murphy and Alonzo Mourning.
